Are HDMI cables suppose to transfer sound as well as HD video? If so, I can't seem to get sound from my laptop to a flatscreen HD TV when I try to run a DVD movie, or any sound for that matter. I have the DVD volume turned all they way up, but no sound comes to the TV.
Any suggestions on what I may be missing here?
Thnx,

No they don't. I run hdmi from my old ATI9800 128mb card to my Samsung 24" lcd hd tv/monitor, and the regular blue port to my 15" secondary. For external sound, you'd have to tap it from your "headphone" port and into the audio-in ports on the tv.

Its all depending on what version your HDMI components are running, though all but the very first version have audio. I use just the one cable from my laptop to my HDTV and that gives me the digital audio/video. Check the manufacturer specs on your components. Here's a link that will explain the difference in versions. You might want to check the cable as well, but it is sounding like a software issue. Something is not quite setup right. www.canadahifi.com/makinghdmi.phpCheers

I'm not sure what version I have, but I bought this lap top in early 2008.

I ran into this overseas. Just go into your sound settings and fiddle. You have to turn off the normal speakers by unchecking and check the sound output you want to use. It's easier than it sounds and I'm sure I made it more complicated.
